Who are "National Democrats"?

The title “National Democrats” (Latvian – “Nacionāldemokrāti”) precisely reflects our goals and values, highlighting both our national identity as Latvians as well as the principles of democracy which we hold dear.

However, “National Democrats” are important in Latvian history as well. The Latvian National Democratic Party functioned in the period from 1917 to 1920. Its’ representatives – well known writers Janis Akuraters and Karlis Skalbe, colonel Fridrihs Briedis and publicist Ernests Blanks – who in 1917 (for the first time) formulated the demand for a completely independent Republic of Latvia in his publication.

We consider the defense of the interests of Latvians a state-nation, Latvia as an independent and sovereign state capable of maintaining, protecting and preserving itself as a national and democratic state, to be our priority.

Our organization aims to:

  • Promote the state, national and patriotic self-awareness of society;
  • Defend the interests of the Latvian state, Latvian nation and statehood;
  • Support the patriotic upbringing of young people to help them develop as patriotic and national-minded people;
  • Get involved and organize public events with the aim of drawing public attention to various state and national issues;
  • Fight against the consequences of occupation and Soviet colonialism, as well as various historical untruths that distort Latvian history and culture.
